Identification of Large Beetles

Select the insect that most closely resembles the beetle you have found. This set only covers the major pests and you may have something else. In that case you should contact your county extension agent. He/She is well trained in local insect problems.

Click Beetles are narrow elongate beetles that make a clicking sound when they are left on their backs.
    Ground Beetle Image
Ground Beetles are fast runners found in the house in the fall. Many have a strong smell.
    Longhorned Beetle Image
Longhorned Beetles are have very long antenna and are often associated with firewood and dead trees.
    Mealworms Image
Mealworms are similar to ground beetles but the headis somewhat scoop shaped. Associated with stored grain and animal feed.
    Oldhouse Borer Image
Oldhouse Borers are a type of a longhorned beetle that are black with some white markings on the wing covers. The legs have an enlarged rounded section on one of the segments. Associated with pine flooring, studs, and house timbers.
    Weevil Image
Weevils may come into the house from outside, but if are larger then 1/2 inch or 1 cm they are not likely to be house infesting. Small weevils are likely to be rice weevils, a stored grain pest.
